Asymmetrical coding solution minimizes power consumption for current and next-generation WLAN mobiles

Buffalo, NY. April 2, 2002 – VOCAL Technologies, Ltd., a leading developer of software and hardware solutions for the communications industry, announces the availability of a proprietary mode of operation that combines the asymmetrical use of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) Codes and Turbo codes in order to minimize the power requirements of mobile devices in a wireless local area network (WLAN). Extending battery life is a major engineering concern in this market, and WLAN designs can benefit significantly from these state-of-the-art coding techniques.

By using VOCAL LDPC Codes in the downlink and Turbo Codes in the uplink, WLAN system designers can increase the battery life of mobile units by a factor of 4. This asymmetrical use of LDPC Codes and Turbo codes shift the majority of the power requirements to the transmitter and receiver of the base unit. The same technique can also be used in satellite and cellular systems, increasing battery life for satellite and cellular handsets.

“With the Asymmetrical VOCAL LDPC Code and Turbo code solution, mobile WLAN units can realize a significant competitive advantage over systems using other coding approaches,” says David Jamieson, Manager of Business Development at VOCAL. “The VOCAL solution is powered by a reliable source of proven software code that will evolve to meet future WLAN standards, so IC and subsystem designers can use the code with confidence.”

Recognizing the need for design flexibility and second sourcing, VOCAL engineers designed the WLAN products to be used with multiple hardware platforms. VOCAL Technologies has a proven track record in the development of reliable LDPC Codes and Turbo Codes, and it has the expertise to integrate these codes into new IEEE WLAN standards.

The Asymmetrical VOCAL LDPC Code and Turbo Code software products are available now.
