February 5, 2002-VOCAL Technologies, Ltd., a leading developer of software and hardware solutions for the communications industry, has released software to enable late second-generation (2.5G) and third-generation (3G) wireless handsets to receive multimedia messaging signals, including audio, text, graphics, and video. Running on wireless basestation digital signal processors (DSPs), the VOCAL Video Gateway software enables wireless devices to receive email, movies, videoconferences, graphics, and audio signals from public Internet or private Intranets. The software translates video, audio and data signals between the wireline network and the wireless network. It is designed to work with current global installations of 2.5G systems as well as with 3G systems when they are deployed. ?With the Video Gateway software, VOCAL engineers have used the experience from our installed base of voice compression and video compression products as well as our acknowledged expertise in high-density modem platforms to develop a vocoder/videocoder product that enables high-capacity, reliable multimedia services in wireless systems? says David Jamieson, Manager of Business Development at VOCAL. Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is expected to be the first next-generation service widely adopted by mobile users. MMS is an open standard specified by The European Technical Standard Institute (ETSI), the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and the Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) Forum.
